For several years now tech geeks have been waiting for verizon to put out its own version of the iPhone. This talk however is not new to waiting customers. We saw the verizon iPhone buzz build up in 2008 as well as 2009 with the rumors sweeping across the blogosphere. Now we can add 2010 to that list with the "Wall Street Journal" reigniting the buzz. The original article stated that Apple was going into production on a CDMA-ready version of the iPhone aimed soley at Verizon. However before you get too excited, industry experts say there are several factors we should consider before:
History of the iPhone buzz- With the gossip surrounding its release building up, experts believe customers should remain skeptical noting the fact that this also happened in 2008 as well as twice in 2009 with no date ever being set for production.
The Technology- Earlier rumors led to Apple releasing a statement that they didnt want to bring the iPhone to Verizon until it had its 4G technology in place. Apple's CEO believed that Verizon's CDMA technology was too limited and basic for the iPhone's technological capacity. Verizon is still in the beginning stages of building up it's 4G network, saying they dont even expect to reach 66% coverage in the nation untill 2012. If Apple is waiting for the 4G network to reach the majority of the nation before releasing an iPhone for the carrier customers might be waiting a very long time.
The iPhone's Exclusivity Issue- The details surrounding Apple's exclusivity contract with AT&T are relatively unknown. Some speculation suggests that the deal expires sometime in 2010 however theres never been an actual date released to the public. Also with the release oh the iPad many believe there was an extension on the exclusivity agreement.
Considering these factors people may want to remain skeptical about a Verizon iPhone release or atleast about one in the near future. The tech geeks and gadget nerds who remain loyal to Verizon may want to think about switching to another carrier.
